Baseball Clipped By TCNJ in Doubleheader

Ewing, NJ – The Montclair State baseball team dropped two one-run games to The College of New Jersey Sunday.

Montclair State (17-9, 4-6 NJAC) fell 3-2 and 7-6.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Montclair drew first blood in the opener, as MATTEO PASCULLI delivered a sacrifice fly in the top of the second inning. The Lions responded in the home half of the frame, scoring three times to open up a 3-1 lead.
  • Pasculli cut the deficit in half in the fourth, as his single to left-field plated JASON MOORE. Montclair looked to tie the game in the sixth, but SAM ANGELO was stranded on second base after a lead-off double.
  • Montclair threatened in the ninth, as Pasculli led off with a single up the middle. He was lifted for a pinch runner, who was thrown out trying to steal second. ANTHONY GUARINO and ETHAN SARMIENTO singled with two out but could not find the tying tally.
  • After a scoreless two frames in game two, TCNJ broke through for a run in the third. Montclair quickly answered as a MAX MCLOUGHLIN RBI single leveled the contest at one. The score remained that way until the bottom of the eighth.
  • The Lions scratched across four runs without recording a hit in the eighth, but CHRIS LUM notched a bases-loaded strikeout to finish the inning.
  • Pinch hitter GIANNI RANA led off the ninth with a walk and moved to second with a REECE MALEK single. After a double-play, Angelo and Moore walked to load the bases. Pasculli was also issued a free pass before RYAN MCKENNA dumped a single to center field to score two. Guarino worked a four-pitch walk, and a McLoughlin double brought home two runners.
  • TCNJ registered two runs in the bottom of the ninth, with the second coming on a sacrifice fly to complete the two-game sweep.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Pasuclli and Angelo had two hits in game one, with Pasculli knocking in the only two runs.
  • McKenna went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored in game two, as McLoughlin had a career-high three RBI.
  • DYLAN TALIAFERRO tossed six innings in game two, earning a no-decision with four strikeouts.
FROM THE FIELD
"
We need to be better finishing close games and executing when given the opportunity. I thought our starters gabe us a chance and we need to come through for them." Head Coach Dave Lorber.
