Baseball Splits With Rutgers-Newark in NJAC Action

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State baseball team split a doubleheader with Rutgers-Newark in their New Jersey Athletic Conference opener Sunday.
 
Montclair (14-3, 1-1 NJAC) picked up a 13-4 win in the opener before falling 9-7 in 10 innings in game two.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Montclair took a 2-0 advantage after three innings in game one, with the first coming on the back end of a double steal. JASON MOORE made it 2-0 with an RBI double to left, scoring MILES FEASTER. The Scarlet Raiders got a run back in the fourth courtesy of an RBI groundout.
  • Montclair added four tallies in the fourth as REECE MALEK dropped an RBI single to right-center with one out. Two batters later, ZACH STEARNS laced an RBI double to left before Feaster closed out the fourth inning scoring with a two-run double to right-center.
  • Rutgers-Newark cut into the lead in the sixth, taking advantage of three consecutive errors and scoring three times to make it 6-4. Montclair responded with two of their own, with MATT KALISKE delivering a two-run double to right.
  • Montclair stretched the lead to 11-4 in the seventh, plating three runs. RYAN MCKENNA and Feaster had sacrifice flies, with SAM ANGELO adding an RBI single through the right side. The Red Hawks capped off the scoring in the eighth, with ANTHONY GUARINO and McKenna tallying RBI knocks.
  • The Red Hawks fell behind 2-0 in the first but got a run back on a double down the right-field line from Angelo. The Scarlet Raiders scored four times in the fourth, needing only one hit to take a 6-1 lead.
  • Montclair State began to chip away, scoring single runs every inning from the fourth through the ninth. Malek and MATTEO PASCULLI had bases-loaded walks in the fifth and sixth, respectively, before Feaster made it 6-5 with an RBI single in the seventh.
  • Rutgers-Newark added an unearned tally in the eighth to extend the gap to 7-5, but Malek cut the lead in half with an RBI groundout in the home half of the eighth. Trailing 7-6 in the ninth, the Red Hawks loaded the bases. Kaliske lofted a fly-ball to right to score Feaster, sending the game to extras.
  • The Scarlet Raiders pushed two unearned runs across in the 10th after loading the bases with two outs. Down to their final chance, Montclair could not scratch a run across and went down 1-2-3 in the 10th.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Every starter had at least one hit in game one, with all but one recording two. McKenna and Stearns led the way with three knocks.
  • Feaster drove in three runs, with Kaliske adding two.
  • PATRICK CUCCURULLO improved to 3-1, going six innings and striking out five. MICHAEL TIMBERLAKE got the final nine outs for his first career save.
  • Feaster and Angelo had three hits in game two, as Pasculli drew three walks.
