Montclair, NJ - The Montclair State baseball swept a New Jersey Athletic Conference twin-bill against Stockton University Saturday afternoon.
The Red Hawks (21-9, 8-6 NJAC) topped the Ospreys 12-8 and 14-11 in winning their four consecutive games.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The two sides traded runs in the first inning of game one, with JASON MOORE contributing an RBI single for Montclair State. The Ospreys took a 3-1 lead in the top of the second before a two-run double from REECE MALEK, and a sacrifice fly from SAM ANGELO gave MSU the 4-3 advantage.
- In the third, Stockton broke through for three tallies as DYLAN TALIAFERRO escaped further damage with a strikeout to end the stanza. The Ospreys opened up an 8-4 in the top of the fifth, but MICHAEL TODARO induced a 6-4-3 double-play to end the fifth.
- Montclair pulled level in the home half of the fifth, netting four runs. MATTEO PASCULLI singled, and Moore was hit by a pitch before ANTHONY GUARINO singled Pasculli in. ZACH STEARNS brought Guarino home with a double, and an RBI single by JOE GISONDA made it 8-8.
- The Red Hawks took the lead for good in the sixth. Moore hit a sacrifice fly before Guarino and Stearns delivered RBI knocks. Malek capped off the inning with an RBI single to right field. Staked to the lead, PATRICK TEEHAN slammed the door on Stockton, allowing one baserunner while getting the final seven outs.
- Montclair wasted little time in the second game, taking a 3-0 lead after two. Pasculli had an RBI single, and Moore added a sacrifice fly in the first inning, with Angelo tacking on a run in the second on a fly-out.
- The Ospreys cut into the deficit with a tally in the fourth, but Montclair matched with another sac fly from Angelo during their turn at the dish. The lead swelled to 6-1 in the fifth on a fly-out from Guarino and an RBI double to left from Stearns.
- Stockton scratched an unearned run across in the sixth, with Montclair responding with a run on a double steal. Moore swiped second, and on the throw home, MILES FEASTER scampered home to make it 7-2.
- The visitors trimmed the gap to one in the seventh, scoring four times. MICHAEL TIMBERLAKE entered in relief and coaxed a fly ball to center field to escape further damage. McKenna and Feaster recorded RBI singles in the bottom of the stanza, stretching the advantage back to three at 9-6.
- Stockton again fought back, returning it to a one-run game after an RBI double and a sacrifice fly.
- Montclair padded their advantage in the eighth, scoring five times. Malek and Angelo notched RBI singles before Feaster delivered a two-run knock to left. Moore finished the eighth-inning barrage with an RBI groundout to plate Angelo. Stockton made it interesting, netting three unearned tallies in the ninth, but VINCENT DESANTIS got the final out with a called strike three.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Todaro, CHRIS LUM, and Teehan combined for 4 2/3 scoreless innings of relief, allowing just four hits and two walks in game one.
- Todaro tallied his first career victory out of the bullpen in the first contest.
- Guarino and Stearns had three hits each in the opener, as Malek drove in three.
- Feaster went 4-for-6 with three RBI as the team pounded out 22 hits.
- McKenna, Angelo, Gisonda, and Malek notched three hits.
