Baseball Erases Eight-Run Deficit, Tops Kean 12-9

Montclair, NJ – SAM ANGELO snapped a 9-9 tie with a three-run, seventh-inning home run as the Montclair State baseball came back from eight runs down to top Kean University 12-9 Friday.

The Red Hawks (23-9, 10-6 NJAC) scored all 12 runs from the fifth through the seventh innings to complete the two-game sweep of Kean (22-14-1, 11-4-1 NJAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars tallied the first score of the afternoon in the second inning before pushing across three runs in the fourth on a two-run triple and an RBI double. The lead swelled to 8-0 after five, as Kean poured in four runs on five hits in the fifth.
  • Montclair dug into the deficit in their at-bat in the fifth, as a walk to ANTHONY GUARINO, a single by REECE MALEK, and a hit by pitch from RYAN MCKENNA loaded the bases. Angelo dumped a single to center-field before a MILES FEASTER fielder's choice sent two more home. MATTEO PASCULLI capped off the inning with a run-scoring groundout.
  • The Red Hawks drew within one in the sixth, adding three runs. JOE GISONDA and Guarino singled, and after a Malek walk, McKenna was hit by a pitch to make it 8-5. Angelo hit into a double-play to score another run, and Feaster's single to right field allowed Malek to score.
  • Kean extended their advantage in the seventh on two walks, a sacrifice bunt, and a fielder's choice before the Red Hawks came back during their turn. JASON MOORE and pinch-hitter MATT KALISKE walked, but the next two hitters were retired.
  • Malek singled to center to score two, and a McKenna knock put runners on the corners for Angelo. The left-handed batter drilled a 2-0 pitch over the right-field wall, giving Montclair their first lead.
  • Staked to the lead, ALEC BENZINGER tossed a perfect eighth before Kean loaded the bases in the ninth. The Red Hawks escaped any damage, as MSU caught a runner trying to score on a wild pitch to close the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • A day after recording his 100th career hit, Angelo went 2-for-5 with four RBI.
  • McKenna, Feaster, Guarino, and Malek all had two hits.
  • The bullpen unit of JACOB DEMBIN, CHRIS LUM, Benzinger, and MATT PONTARI tossed 4 2/3 frames of one-run ball and surrendered four hits.
