Football: 2022 Season In Review

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State football team notched a pair of victories and had an All-American during the 2022 campaign.
 
SEASON HIGHLIGHTS
The Red Hawks opened the year with a 27-6 triumph over Thiel College, with MAKAI MICKENS tallying two touchdowns on the ground and JALIL TERRELL scooping up a blocked punt for a score. Montclair State downed Salve Regina in Week 3 as the defense picked off six passes, including two from KIMANI CARRINGTON. BRENNAN RAY and NICHOLAS BURGESS had defensive scores late in the season, with Ray adding a rushing score in the season finale against William Paterson.

After 40 years, Rick Giancola announced his retirement as the head coach of the football program. He posted a 260-143-2 mark at the helm of the Red Hawks, including 12 New Jersey Athletic Conference Championships and nine NCAA Playoff Appearances.
 
NEW ERA, NEW STANDARDS
Mike Palazzo became the eighth head coach in program history after serving as the Associate Head Coach during the 2022 season. Palazzo, a Montclair State graduate, previously was the Wide Receivers Coach and Special Teams Coordinator at his alma mater.

ALL-AMERICAN/ALL-REGION
MIKE RAMOS was named Second Team AFCA All-American and Third Team All-Region 2 by D3football.com. Ramos was second on the club with 81.0 tackles, adding four pass-breakups, two interceptions, and a team-high two forced fumbles. An NJAC Defensive Player of the Week selection, Ramos had 13 tackles, including three for a loss against nationally-ranked Delaware Valley.
