Montclair, NJ - The Montclair State University and Rowan University football programs announced the creation of the annual "Breakfast Bowl" on Monday morning.
The Breakfast Bowl, which will become an annual tradition between the two in-state rivals, will aim to assist efforts in fighting food insecurity throughout the state of New Jersey. Both schools have partnered with the Community Food Bank of New Jersey, and will collect donations leading up to their game on November 2.
"We are thrilled to start an annual tradition with Rowan and help fight food insecurity in the state of New Jersey," Head Coach Mike Palazzo said. "Montclair and Rowan has always been a competitive and exciting rivalry, and we are excited to add another layer to our games every year going forward."
On game day, Community Food Bank will set up collection points at Coach Richard Wackar Stadium, complete with QR codes for donations and cash collection. As part of competitive donations, if attendees refer to it as "Pork Roll", they will contribute to the Egg Harbor location, and inversely will donate to the Hillside location if they refer to it as "Taylor Ham".
Additionally, Resolution Bill AR152 was introduced in the New Jersey Legislature through Assemblyman Mike Venezia and Assistant Coach Jordan Stewart, expressing support for the Breakfast Bowl and its goal of fighting food insecurity in the state. Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin, along with Assemblywoman Carmen Morales, joined as cosponsors of the resolution in support.
Montclair and Rowan will square off in Glassboro, NJ on Saturday, November 2, with kickoff scheduled for 2:00 PM. November's meeting will mark the 53rd clash between the two sides, with the Red Hawks holding a 36-26 edge in the all-time series. The winner of the contest will be presented with a trophy, and will have the unofficial bragging rights of the "Taylor Ham versus Pork Roll" debate.
