Baseball Notches Split At Stockton

Galloway, NJ – The No. 8/12 Montclair State University baseball team split a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader against Stockton University on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Red Hawks (24-6, 6-3 NJAC) won the opener 11-4 before falling 6-4 in the second game.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Montclair jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two frames. Just two batters into the game, SAM ANGELO belted a solo home run, giving Montclair a 1-0 advantage. The guests tacked on three in the second, with RYAN MCKENNA bringing three runners home on a double to right.
  • Angelo added to the lead in the fourth, dropping a single into right field to score MILES FEASTER. Feaster reached on a one-out single with one down. The Ospreys put runners on second and third in the home half of the fourth, but JACK HAVESON ended the stanza with a groundout to short.
  • JASON MOORE and Feaster walked in the sixth before Angelo crushed his second home run of the game, this time a three-run shot down the left field line. The Ospreys cut into the lead, plating two on a fly-out in the bottom of the seventh.
  • Moore capped off the scoring in the ninth, lofting a fly ball to center that scored JOE GISONDA from third. Stockton added two in the bottom of the inning, but PATRICK CUCCURULLO fanned a batter with the bases loaded to end game one.
  • MICHAEL MURPHY, Gisonda, and Moore strung together three straight singles in the second inning of game two, putting Montclair up 1-0. Stockton tied the game in the bottom of the third before taking a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth on a solo homer.
  • Stockton added to the margin in the seventh, as consecutive hit by pitches with bases loaded scored two runs. MARCUS JOHNSON doubled with one out in the seventh and moved up on a wild pitch. MAX MCLOUGHLIN singled him home with a knock to left, making it 4-2.
  • Gisonda led off the ninth with a single, and pinch-hitter MATTEO PASCULLI and MATT SHUHET walked to load the base with one down. Johnson reached base on an infield single to score Johnson, and pinch runner REECE MALEK scored a sac fly from Feaster to level the game at four.
  • The Red Hawks got the first two outs in the ninth before a walk and two-run home run to right field gave Stockton the split with a 6-4 win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Haveson tossed six scoreless frames to move to 6-0 on the year. The right-hander struck out four while surrendering five hits.
  • Angelo was a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish in game one, driving in six runs.
  • Moore walked three times in the opener, with Gisonda going 2-for-4 with a walk.
  • Murphy, Gisonda, and Johnson all went 2-for-4 in the nightcap, with Johnson collecting the lone extra-base hit of the game.

The Red Hawks take on Kean University tomorrow, with the first pitch in Union, NJ scheduled for noon.
