Baseball Edged by Kean

Union, NJ The Montclair State University baseball team was edged by Kean 5-2 on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (24-7, 6-4 NJAC) fell behind early, as the Cougars broke the scoring open in the first inning on an RBI double down the left field line. Montclair leveled the contest in the following frame as JOEY NOLAN singled to right center to drive in MARCUS JOHNSON.
  • With a runner on base, the Cougars answered in the bottom of the second inning on a home run to left field to make the score 3-1.
  • SAM ANGELO walked to lead off the sixth, and advanced to third later in the stanza on a double down the left field line by JASON MOORE. MARCUS JOHNSON flied out to left center during the next at-bat to plate Angelo and cut the margin to one.
  • Kean plated another tally in the seventh on consecutive errors, and added their final run of the contest the following frame to build their largest lead of the afternoon.
  • The visitors threatened in the ninth, as MAX MCLOUGHLIN walked with two outs and advanced to second on an infield single from REECE MALEK. The Cougars recorded the final out of the day to seal the home victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • BRENDAN ROCHE made his first collegiate start, logging a career-high five innings while striking out two batters. SEBASTIAN ECKER threw three innings of relief for the Red Hawks.
  • Malek led Montclair with two hits on the day, with Nolan recording his first collegiate RBI in his second career start.
