Baseball Edged by Rutgers-Camden

Montclair, NJ The #20 Montclair State University baseball team was edged by Rutgers-Camden 3-2 on Thursday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (26-10, 8-7 NJAC) started the contest strong, as JACK HAVESON set down the first six batters of the contest on the mound. MICHAEL MURPHY was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the second, and JOE GISONDA singled through the left side during the next at-bat. Later in the inning, ZACH STEARNS singled to right field to break the scoring open by plating Murphy.
  • Haveson faced the minimum over the next three innings, allowing just one hit while punching out three batters. Montclair threatened in the fifth, as MILES FEASTER and SAM ANGELO collected back-to-back singles. The Scarlet Raptors escaped the jam with the final out with runners on the corners.
  • Rutgers-Camden took their first lead of the afternoon in the seventh with a two-run home run to left center. They added another tally in the eighth, as they advanced a runner to third following a leadoff double, and plated the run on a single through the left side.
  • MARCUS JOHNSON led off the ninth with a double to right field, and later advanced to third on a wild pitch. JASON MOORE brought in Johnson on a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to one, but the Scarlet Raptors recorded the final out of the day to seal the road victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • With his single in the fifth inning, Feaster recorded the 200th of his collegiate career. He became the 15th student-athlete in program history to reach the mark and the first since Joe Norton during the 2022 season.
  • Feaster moved into sole possession of 14th in program history for career hits, surpassing John McClain and Jim Fasano.
  • Johnson recorded his 11th multi-hit game of the season for the Red Hawks.
  • Haveson amassed eight innings pitched with seven strikeouts on the day. He has thrown eight innings in three of his last four starts, with his seven punchouts one off his career-high of eight.
