Baseball Sweeps #10/11 Rowan Behind Two Shutouts

Montclair, NJ The #18/20 Montclair State University baseball team swept #10/11 Rowan University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium.

The Red Hawks (23-4, 5-1 NJAC) surged past the Profs 8-0 in the opener and cruised to a 12-0 victory in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • JACK HAVESON retired nine of the first 10 batters he faced to open game one, punching out four batters. SAM ANGELO singled to right center in the third inning to drive in a run, and JASON MOORE doubled in the fourth to plate another. MAX MCLOUGHLIN reached on a throwing error in the next at-bat which allowed Moore to score from second.
  • After Haveson threw two more scoreless frames, Moore used a triple to right center to add another run for Montclair, making it a 4-0 game. Angelo tallied another RBI single in the seventh to expand the margin to five. Haveson set down Rowan in order in the eighth to conclude his afternoon.
  • Montclair added its final tallies of the opening game in the bottom of the eighth. JOE GISONDA tripled to right center, and Moore doubled during the next at-bat to plate Gisonda. Later in the frame, REECE MALEK and MILES FEASTER tallied back-to-back RBI singles to make the final margin eight runs.
  • Angelo homered to right center to open the scoring in game two in the first inning, and Montclair doubled their advantage in the frame on a sacrifice fly from MICHAEL MURPHY. The Red Hawks added another tally in the second on an RBI single from Feaster following a double by Malek.
  • The home side continued their offensive surge in the third stanza. With two runners in scoring position, Moore singled to left field to clear the bases. Malek singled up the middle two batters later to plate Moore from second base. After Malek advanced on a wild pitch, Feaster drove in another run to make the lead seven.
  • The Profs threatened in the fifth, placing runners on second and third with one out, but MICHAEL TIMBERLAKE recorded a strikeout and induced a flyout to end the frame. Montclair added another run in the seventh on a single from McLoughlin. The Red Hawks plated three more tallies in the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Gisonda and RBI singles from Moore and Malek.
