Baseball Wins Sixth Straight; Takes Down Christopher Newport 3-2

Montclair, NJ The Montclair State University baseball team notched its sixth consecutive victory on Saturday afternoon as it took down Christopher Newport 3-2 at Yogi Berra Stadium in the second day of the 2025 MSU Round Robin.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (13-6) received a strong start from PATRICK CUCCURULLO, who worked around runners on first and second by inducing a double play to end the top of the first. The Captains broke the scoring open in the second, however, as a throwing error put the leadoff batter on and a single through the left side put runners on the corners with no outs. Montclair successfully picked off the runner at first, but during the rundown, the visitors plated their first marker of the day.
  • CHASE FISCHER provided an immediate counter for the Red Hawks, as he homered to deep center field to lead off the Montclair half of the stanza. Christopher Newport threatened a few innings later, as back-to-back errors put two runners in scoring position, but Cuccurullo struck out the final hitter of the frame to keep the contest level.
  • Montclair took the lead in the bottom of the fifth, as BILLY TIGAR led off the inning with a double to right center and advanced to third on a ground out during the next at-bat. Later in the frame, LUKAS EGENHAUSER singled up the middle to plate Tigar. The Captains tied the game in the seventh, as a two-out single led to a double to center field during the next at-bat to drive in the tying-tally.
  • MICHAEL MURPHY led off the Montclair half of the frame with a walk, and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from CHRIS GONZALO. Murphy advanced to third on another groundout, and then came home on a single to right center by JARED LEVIS to vault the Red Hawks back in front. PATRICK TEEHAN entered the game in relief in the eighth and retired six of the seven batters he faced over the remainder of the contest to seal the victory for Montclair.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • Five different Red Hawks notched a hit on the day, with Levis increasing his team-leading total to 26 on the campaign. He has also notched 18 runs batted in from the leadoff spot, which is good for second on the team.
  • Fischer has homered in back-to-back games for Montclair and has recorded a hit in each of the team's last four contests, driving in a run in all of them as well.
  • Cuccurullo notched a season-best seven innings pitched on the day, striking out five batters. It marked his third seven-inning pitching performance of his collegiate career.
  • Teehan notched his sixth save of the season, moving into a tie with Austin Minton for fifth in program history with nine for his career.
  • Montclair has won six consecutive contests, marking the fourth-straight season in which they have amassed a win streak of six or more games.
  • The Red Hawks are 10-1 this season at Yogi Berra Stadium and have won 66 games at home dating back to the beginning of the 2021 campaign.
