Baseball Falls to Stevens, 6-4

Hoboken, NJ The Montclair State University baseball team was edged by Stevens 6-4 on Tuesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (6-2) fell behind early, as the Ducks claimed the afternoon's first run on a leadoff home run to right field in the bottom of the opening stanza. Stevens continued to threaten in the inning, placing runners on first and second, but EVAN WOOD retired the final two batters of the frame on a strikeout and groundout.
  • Stevens doubled their advantage in the second, as a leadoff single led to a runner on third following a groundout and passed ball. A single to left field during the next at-bat plated the run for the home side. Montclair placed runners in scoring position over the next two innings, but the Ducks escaped both frames.
  • Montclair rallied in the fifth, as LUKAS EGENHAUSER led off the inning with a single up the middle and stole second during the next at-bat. CHRIS GONZALO singled to center field to advance Egenhauser to third, and a groundout from JARED LEVIS brought in the first run of the day for Montclair. ZACH STEARNS homered to right field during the next at-bat to clear the bases and give the Red Hawks a 3-2 lead.
  • The visitors added to their advantage in the next frame, as BILLY TIGAR kicked off the stanza with a four pitch leadoff walk and advanced to third over the next two at-bats. Levis singled to right center to drive him in and increase the margin to two. Stevens shaved off a run in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice fly.
  • Stevens reclaimed the lead in the eighth, putting the first two batters on to begin the frame which led to a run scoring later in the stanza on a throwing error. With the contest level at four, a single up the middle with the bases loaded plated two runs to push the home side in front.
  • Back-to-back walks to kick off the ninth placed a runner in scoring position with no outs for the Red Hawks. After a fielder's choice, JUSTIN KILYK was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Stevens retired the final two batters of the game on a strikeout and fielder's choice to seal the victory.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • Levis notched a hit and two runs batted in on the day, increasing his team lead in hits to 15 on the campaign. He ranks second on the team with 13 RBI.
  • The home run for Stearns marked the first of his collegiate career. He has reached base safely in all seven of his appearances this season.
  • Wood amassed five and a third innings pitched, striking out four batters.
FROM THE FIELD

"Stevens threw some quality arms today, credit to them. We battled but again we beat ourselves defensively and in order to beat quality teams we need to fix that and we will." - Head Coach Dave Lorber
