Baseball Uses Late Inning Surge to Top Maryville, 10-8

High Point, NC The Montclair State University baseball team tallied five runs over the final two innings to top Maryville College, 10-8, on Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (7-2) got a strong start from PATRICK CUCCURULLO, who recorded two scoreless frames to open the contest before the visitors took the lead in the top of the third, as JUSTIN KILYK plated a run on a sacrifice fly to right field. Cuccurullo faced the minimum number of batters in the third, leading to another Montclair marker in the fourth on a CHASE FISCHER single to left field that plated LUKAS EGENHAUSER.
  • The Scots cut the deficit in half in the next stanza, as they loaded the bases on the first three batters and scored during the next at-bat on a sacrifice fly. Montclair got the run back in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly from MICHAEL MURPHY to drive in Egenhauser. Maryville leveled the contest in the bottom half of the frame on back-to-back home runs.
  • Egenhauser broke the game back open in the seventh with an infield single that brought home two runners in scoring position. The Scots countered immediately with three runs and three hits to take a 6-5 edge heading into the final two innings of play.
  • Murphy led off the eighth with a walk and a stolen base during the next at-bat, which was followed up by a walk by Fischer. A sacrifice bunt from BILLY TIGAR moved both runners up, and a ZACH STEARNS walk two at-bats later loaded the bases. Montclair tied the game as Murphy scored on a wild pitch, and Kilyk singled to right field to put the Red Hawks in front by two runs.
  • After PATRICK TEEHAN struck out three out of four batters in the bottom of the eighth, Montclair added to their lead in the ninth. Egenhauser singled to center field and advanced to second and then third on an error by the pitcher. MATTHEW RINALDI plated the run with an infield single, and he came around to score later in the inning on a wild pitch. Maryville tallied two runs in the ninth, but the Red Hawks were able to seal the victory.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • Egenhauser led the way for Montclair with a career-high four hits to go along with two runs batted in. Kilyk drove in three runs for the Red Hawks, his second game this season with three or more RBI.
  • Cuccurullo notched a season-best six and a third innings pitched, striking out six batters in the process. Teehan notched the victory, spanning two and two thirds innings pitched, punching out a season-high seven at the plate. He has not allowed an earned run in five appearances to kick off the campaign.

FROM THE FIELD

"That was our best overall team game this season against a very good team. Both PATRICK CUCCURULLO and PATRICK TEEHAN did a phenomenal job, and we executed and had some timely hits. We need to continue to build on that brand of baseball as we move on." - Head Coach Dave Lorber
