Levis Notches Walk-Off Winner; Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Stockton

Montclair, NJ The Montclair State University baseball team split a doubleheader with Stockton on Sunday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium.

The Red Hawks (20-10, 6-3 NJAC) took game one 5-4 on a walk-off single from JARED LEVIS in the 10th inning before falling 6-2 in the second contest.

GAME ONE

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Montclair fell behind in the second, as back-to-back singles from the Ospreys put runners on the corners to lead off the frame. After a pop-up in the infield, a sacrifice fly to center field plated the day's opening run. The Red Hawks countered immediately, as MILES FEASTER led off the home half of the stanza with a walk and stole second during the next at-bat. Later in the frame, CHRIS GONZALO singled up the middle to drive in Feaster and level the game.
  • Stockton surged back in front in the fourth, placing two runners on to begin the inning on back-to-back singles. After a groundout put both runners in scoring position, a single through the right side brought in both to push the margin to two. Montclair cut the deficit in half that same inning, as ZACH STEARNS notched a bases-loaded walk to bring in LUKAS EGENHAUSER.
  • The Ospreys pushed the lead back to two in the sixth on a single up the middle following a fielding error to drive in a run from second base. Montclair answered with a run of their own in the seventh, as MARCUS JOHNSON led off the inning with an infield single and was driven in by a double to right field by CHASE FISCHER. The Red Hawks tied the game in the eighth on a single up the middle from Stearns that plated Gonzalo from second.
  • PATRICK TEEHAN entered the game in the ninth and faced the minimum number of batters over two innings, paving the way for Levis to win the game in the tenth on a hit down the right field line that brought in Egenhauser from second.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • Levis, Stearns, Johnson, and Fischer all notched multi-hit performances, with Stearns leading the way with two runs batted in.
  • The walk-off single for Levis marked the first of his collegiate career, marking the first for Montclair as a team since April 1, 2024, when SAM ANGELO drove in the winning run against Stevens.
  • PATRICK CUCCURULLO got the start and pitched seven innings for the Red Hawks, marking his fourth straight appearance of seven or more frames.
  • Teehan notched his fourth victory of the season, punching out three batters over the final two innings.
GAME TWO

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two sides battled a scoreless opening two innings before the Ospreys broke through in the third. A bases-loaded walk pushed the visitors in front, and after a pop-out during the next at-bat, Stockton plated their second on a sacrifice fly to left field. A single to right field from the next batter pushed the margin to three, but Montclair was able to escape the bases-loaded jam with a fielder's choice to end the run.
  • A leadoff walk in the sixth led to a runner on third for Stockton after back-to-back groundouts, and a hit batter and stolen base put a second runner in scoring position. The Ospreys plated the run from third on a single to center field, but could not get another as MICHAEL MURPHY recorded the final out of the frame on a throw to home to get the second runner.
  • Stockton looked to add to their lead again in the seventh, loading the bases with one out. CHRIS HASTINGS entered the game in relief, inducing a fly-out to Levis in right field, who recorded the final out throwing a runner out at home on the throw. The road side plated two in the top of the ninth, however, on a double and bases-loaded walk.
  • Montclair attempted to rally in the ninth, as Levis reached on a throwing error to kick off the stanza, and Stearns followed that with a single through the right side during the next at-bat. Johnson advanced Levis to third to put runners on the corners, and Fischer drove in the first run of the game for the Red Hawks on a single to right center. MILES FEASTER brought in another marker later in the frame on a single to center field, but Montclair could not get any closer.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • Fischer tallied a pair of hits to lead the Red Hawks in the second contest. He has recorded multi-hit performances in three of his last four games.
  • Levis increased his hitting streak to nine games at the conclusion of the day. He has reached base safely in each of Montclair's last 13 contests.
