Baseball Defeated by #11 Kean

Union, NJ The Montclair State University baseball team fell to #11 Kean 11-1 on Monday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (20-11, 6-4 NJAC) fell behind in the second inning, as the Cougars placed the first two batters on with a double and a walk. After a groundout put both runners in scoring position, a hit batter loaded the bases leading to a single that drove in the game's first two markers. Another bases-loaded single later in the frame doubled the margin to four, and Kean added two more on a bases-loaded walk and sacrifice fly to take a six-run advantage.
  • Kean added to their lead in the fifth, as a hit batter and double down the right field line put two runners in scoring position. The Cougars attempted to score on a wild pitch, but ZACH STEARNS got the runner out at the plate with a throw to TOBY SMITH covering. The home side scored during the next at-bat on a sacrifice fly to right field to make the margin seven.
  • The Cougars continued to push offensively the next frame, as back-to-back singles to kick off the stanza led to a runner coming home on a throwing error on a pick-off attempt. Another error later in the frame allowed another runner to come home, and Kean increased the margin to double-figures on a wild pitch. A single to left field brought in the final marker of the day for the home side.
  • Montclair broke through in the eighth, as JAKE SMITH led off the inning with a single up the middle, and JOEY NOLAN followed it up with a hit of his own during the next at-bat to place two runners on. DYLAN BRIGGS singled to left center to plate Smith and the first run of the day for the Red Hawks, but Montclair could not rally any closer, falling in the NJAC road contest.
