Baseball Notches Fifth Consecutive Victory; Defeats MIT 15-5 to Complete Weekend Sweep

Montclair, NJ The Montclair State University Baseball team completed a weekend sweep over MIT, surging past the Engineers 15-5 in eight innings on Sunday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (11-3) took the lead in their half of the second, as CHASE FISCHER reached on a fielding error by the MIT third baseman and DANNY O'BRIEN singled to right center to put runners on the corners. MATT KALISKE broke the scoring open with a sacrifice fly, and with the bases loaded, JARED LEVIS and ZACH STEARNS were both hit by pitches to push the margin to three. With runners still on each base, BILLY TIGAR ripped a grand slam over the right field fence to balloon the advantage to seven. MIT would get one back in the top of the third on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded.
  • Montclair tacked on a pair of runs in the home portion of the stanza, as O'Brien and JOHN TOMSHO moved into scoring position on a wild pitch for CHRISTIAN PETINO JR., who reached on an error by the shortstop that allowed a run to come in. On a steal attempt, the Red Hawks plated another run on the throw down to second to make the score 9-1 after three. A double down the left field line after a leadoff walk put two in scoring position for the Engineers, who drove in a run on an infield single. Tigar countered right away in the fourth, singling to right field to drive in Stearns to push Montclair into double figures.
  • MIT threatened in the fifth, as a leadoff walk, stolen base, and error moved a runner to third. After a walk to put runners on the corners, a double to left field plated two to cut the deficit to six for the Engineers. The visitors added another following a pitching change on a single up the middle to make the score 10-5. Tomsho made his way to third in the home half of the fifth, and a safety squeeze from Levis brought in the 11th marker of the day for the Red Hawks. After Stearns was hit by another pitch, Tigar rattled a single up the middle to drive in Levis to increase the score to 12-5.
  • Montclair placed the first three batters of the seventh on, as LUKAS EGENHAUSER drew a walk leading to a single through the left side by Levis. Stearns notched a walk to load the bases for Tigar, who reached on a fielder's choice to bring in a tally. During the next at-bat, Fischer singled through the left side to make the margin 14-5. The Red Hawks had two runners in scoring position with two outs, but the Engineers generated a strikeout and flyout to end the threat. Montclair ended the game in the eighth with a single to left center from Stearns that plated Egenhauser from second to complete the weekend sweep.
