Matesic Tosses Seven Shutout Frames; Baseball Surges Past Westfield State 13-0

Montclair, NJ CHRIS MATESIC tossed seven scoreless frames on the mound as the Montclair State University Baseball team took down Westfield State 13-0 on Saturday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (13-4) got into trouble early, as Westfield State recorded a first-pitch single through the right side and put another runner on with a hit to right field during the next at-bat. A fielder's choice would put runners on the corners for Matestic, who recorded a strikeout and generated a first-pitch groundout to halt the threat. JARED LEVIS and ZACH STEARNS drew consecutive walks to begin the home half of the first, with BILLY TIGAR breaking the scoring open on a single to left field. With the bases loaded shortly after, DANNY O'BRIEN singled to right center to plate a pair of runs. JOHN TOMSHO added the fourth tally of the frame for the Red Hawks two at-bats later, singling through the right side.
  • A failed pickoff attempt kept the first going for Montclair, moving Tomsho and O'Brien into scoring position with just one out. MICHAEL WANSAW JR. was hit by a pitch during the next at-bat, with a wild pitch plating O'Brien from third to make the score 5-0. During the same at-bat, an errant throw from the catcher back to the pitcher scored Tomsho, with a wild pitch allowing Wansaw to come home right after vaulting the gap to seven after one inning of play. Matesic set down six of the next seven hitters he faced, leading to another offensive surge from the Red Hawks in the third. A pair of singles from Tomsho and Egenhauser put two in scoring position after stolen bases for Levis, who generated a run on a groundout. An error on a failed pickoff attempt from the Owls drove in Wansaw to make the score 9-0.
  • Matesic retired the side in order each of the next three frames, with Stearns and Tigar reaching safely in the bottom of the sixth on a pair of hits. With two pinch-runners on, CHASE FISCHER placed a hit into right center to score JAKE LOBUE and push the total for the Red Hawks into double-digits. O'Brien continued his strong day at the plate right after, doubling to the same portion of the field to add another marker. Two at-bats later, Tomsho ripped a single to center field to clear the bases and nudge the margin to 13. Westfield State notched a double down the left field line in the top of the seventh, trying to plate a runner from first. A strong relay from DYLAN BRIGGS to LUKAS EGENHAUSER and finished by JOEY NOLAN at the plate, the Red Hawks cut down the runner trying to score. Matesic recorded a groundout shortly after to seal the victory.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • Matesic earned his fourth victory of the season on the mound, spanning the full seven innings while allowing just five total baserunners, all coming within either the first or seventh frame. The performance marked a new career-best for the freshman right-hander, tossing just 80 total pitches in an efficient outing.
  • O'Brien matched his career-high with three runs batted in on a pair of hits, increasing his hitting streak to 11 games. He has reached base safely in 13 out of 14 career games to begin his collegiate career.
  • Tomsho notched one of his best performances as a freshman, collecting a trio of hits and runs batted in to help lead the way offensively for the Red Hawks, both career-bests. He extended his hitting streak to 11 games, which is tied for the second-longest stretch on the team this year.
  • Tigar tallied his 11th multi-hit game of the campaign, increasing his hitting streak to 26 games dating back to April 18, 2025. During that stretch, he has amassed 52 hits and 41 RBI, leading the New Jersey Athletic Conference in both categories this season.
  • Montclair recorded double-digit runs for the 11th time this season, collecting 10 or more hits for the 11th-straight contest and 13th time overall. They have totaled 144 hits during that 11-game span.
  • The Red Hawks are 84-23 at Yogi Berra Stadium since the beginning of the 2020 season, including a mark of 8-1 this year.
