Baseball Defeats Westfield State 13-3 to Clinch Weekend Series

Montclair, NJ The Montclair State University Baseball team clinched its weekend series against Westfield State on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Owls 13-3 at Yogi Berra Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (14-4) fell behind in the opening frame, as the Owls used a pair of singles to put runners on the corners with two outs. Back-to-back hits would plate a pair of runs to break the scoring open, with a bases-loaded walk driving in another tally to help the visitors build a three-run lead. Montclair pushed back in the home half of the second, as DANNY O'BRIEN led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch, and a walk from JOHN TOMSHO put a pair of runners on. After the pair stole bases to move into scoring position, DYLAN BRIGGS ripped a double into the gap to cut the difference to one. Later in the stanza, JARED LEVIS doubled to left field to bring in Briggs to provide the equalizer.
  • Tomsho continued what would be a stellar day at the plate in the third, doubling to left center to plate BILLY TIGAR, who led off the inning with an extra-base hit of his own. The following stanza, the Red Hawks broke the game open. Briggs, LUKAS EGENHAUSER, and Levis rattled off three consecutive hits to kick off the frame to load the bases. A wild pitch allowed Briggs to come home, and after the bases were loaded on a hit batter, Tigar increased the home lead to three on a sacrifice fly. With the bases still full later in the inning, O'Brien notched a sacrifice fly of his own to drive in another tally, with Tomsho hitting a single up the middle to bring in two more markers. MICHAEL WANSAW JR. would nudge Montclair into double-digits, plating Tomsho on an RBI single.
  • The Owls threatened in the top of the sixth, loading the bases with only one out. JOE PACCIONE recorded a pair of strikeouts to halt the rally and maintain the lead at 10-3. Tomsho capped off his afternoon in the Red Hawk half of the inning, homering to left field to push Montclair to 11 runs on the day. Briggs drew a walk and Egenhauser was hit by a pitch, as the duo stole second and third for Levis, who capitalized on a fielding error by the shortstop that allowed both runners to score. With the lead at 10 going into the seventh, PATRICK TEEHAN entered the game and retired the side in order to seal the victory and the series for the Red Hawks.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • Tomsho collected three hits and four runs batted in, setting a new career-high. He totaled seven of each during the weekend series and now has three performances this season in which he has notched a trio of hits. The freshman now has a nine-game hitting streak, reaching base safely in all but one of his appearances.
  • Briggs tallied a pair of hits and runs batted in, his best output at the plate this season in his 10th career start. Egenhauser's two hits brought him to 100 in his collegiate career, his fifth multi-hit game of the season. Levis was the final Red Hawk with multiple hits, plating a run as well.
  • Tigar increased his hitting streak to 27 games dating back to April 18, 2025. During that stretch, he has amassed 53 hits and 42 RBI, leading the New Jersey Athletic Conference in both categories this season.
  • LOGAN SHUMARD earned his third collegiate victory on the mound, logging four innings of relief, allowing just three total baserunners.
  • Montclair totaled double-digit runs for the 12th time this season, collecting 10 or more hits for the 12th-straight contest and 14th time overall. They have accumulated 156 hits during that 12-game span.
  • The Red Hawks are 85-23 at Yogi Berra Stadium since the beginning of the 2020 season, including a 10-1 mark this year.
FROM THE BALLPARK

"Incredible job by our bullpen to keep the game steady and allow for our bats to come alive at the plate. We will refocus for a pair of nonconference midweek games before we kick off NJAC play next weekend." - Head Coach Dave Lorber
