#23 Baseball Falls to #7 Kean in NJAC Road Battle

Union, NJ The #23 Montclair State University Baseball team fell to #7 Kean 11-2 on Thursday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (20-7, 4-3 NJAC) broke the scoring right out of the gate, as JARED LEVIS drew a seven-pitch walk to put a runner on for ZACH STEARNS, who ripped the first pitch he saw down the right field line for a home run to put the visitors up. Kean put two on in the bottom of the first, but JOE PACCIONE was able to escape the jam by inducing a fielder's choice. The Cougars put a runner on in the second frame as well, but Montclair was able to spin a double play to maintain the margin. In the third, back-to-back singles to kick off the stanza led to a sacrifice fly from the home side to cut the margin in half.
  • Kean took the lead in the fourth, using a double and single through the ride side to put runners on the corners with no out, leading to a safety squeeze bunt that brought in the leveling tally. The go-ahead run came in to score on a throw down to second base on a steal attempt, with a double to left center plating the third marker of the stanza. With runners on the corners in the fifth, a groundout plated the fifth run of the day for Kean, who added another during the next at-bat on another double to left center. Stearns and BILLY TIGAR kicked off the sixth with back-to-back hits, but the Cougars generated a double play to halt the potential rally.
  • Putting the first two on in the home half of the sixth, Kean drove in another run in the ensuing at-bat to expand the lead to five. After a balk brought in a runner from third, a pair of hit batters loaded the bases for the Cougars, who capitalized on an error from the visitors that brought in their final three runs of the afternoon, pushing the lead to nine. The home side threatened again in their half of the eighth, loading the bases with two outs, but a three-pitch strikeout from EVAN WOOD ended the day at the plate for Kean. MATT KALISKE and JOHN TOMSHO notched a pair of two-out hits in the top of the ninth, but Montclair could not get any closer as the Cougars sealed the home victory.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • Stearns led the way offensively with a trio of hits, matching his season-high that he collected three times this year. His home run marked the third of the season and fifth of his collegiate career. The senior extended his hitting streak to 14 games dating back to March 15, with six of his last eight games being multi-hit performances.
  • Kaliske tallied his fourth multi-hit game over his last five, with Tomsho notching a pair of hits in his only two at-bats of the contest. Tomsho has recorded a hit in 16 of his 18 collegiate appearances to kick off his career.
