Montclair, NJ – For the Montclair State and Rowan men's soccer teams, you get the feeling we've been here before. And that would be correct when the two meet in the semifinals of the NJAC Men's Soccer Championship on Tuesday at MSU Soccer Park.
Tickets for the game are $5 for general admission, $2 for students, children and seniors.
The first 50 MSU Students will receive FREE admission with ID.
The second meeting between the top-seeded Red Hawks (15-1-2) and fourth-seeded Profs (12-6) kicks off at 7pm with the winner advancing to the championship on Friday, November 2 at the site of the highest remaining seed. Second-seeded Ramapo and sixth-seed William Paterson meet in the other semifinal on Tuesday at 2pm in Mahwah.
Tuesday's match marks the eighth time that two square off in the conference tournament and third time in the last four years. Montclair holds a 4-3 leads in those games with five taking place at MSU Soccer Park. In fact, this year sets up much like the first one in 2003 when the fourth-seeded Profs upset the No. 1 seed Red Hawks 4-1 in the semifinals at Montclair State. Rowan won the following year at home 1-0 before Montclair captured the next two meetings in 2007 (2-0 in the semifinals) and 2009 posting a 1-0 triumph in the title match.
Rowan snapped that streak in 2012 with a 2-1 win at MSU Soccer Park in a game that was delayed three days following the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy. The Red Hawks returned the favor in 2015 with a 5-1 semifinal victory and shocked the Profs in 2016 at home with a 3-0 win to claim the NJAC championship.
Rowan holds the all-time series lead 34-30-6 however Montclair State has won 15 of the last 19 meetings including a 1-0 win at MSU Soccer Park on September 22.
NIXON SOGLO scored the lone goal in the 67
th minute as MSU held off several late chances by the Profs.
MIKE SAALFRANK made five saves in recording the shutout.
The Red Hawks received a first-round bye after winning the regular-season title with an 8-0-1 mark in conference play. Meanwhile the Profs earned their ticket to the semifinals following a 4-2 victory against fifth-seeded Stockton on Saturday in Glassboro. Ryan Campbell registered a hat trick scoring twice in the first half before knocking in a penalty kick early in the second for a 3-0 lead. After Stockton cut the deficit to a goal, Saif Elsiedy put the game away with 10:05 remaining.
Campbell leads the Profs in scoring with 16 goals and 33 points including four game-winning tallies. Kevin Primich is next at 13 points on four goals and five assists with Shane Doherty scoring five times for Rowan, which averages 2.11 goals per game. Kyle Dennis has been solid in goal with a 0.90 goals against average and 51 saves along with five shutouts. Dennis had seven stops in the loss to MSU back in September.
