CHAZ BURNETT adding one in the second.
MIKE SAALFRANK stopped six shots for the Red Hawks.
Since that time both teams have done nothing but win with a few ties thrown in. Montclair State is 4-0-1 since that meeting and is riding a 14-game unbeaten streak. Ramapo has been just as good posting a 4-0-2 mark since the loss.
Montclair State is seeking its 13
th conference title overall and seventh in the conference tournament era which began in 1999. MSU is in the NJAC Championship Game for the ninth time overall and fourth time in the last five years. The Red Hawks captured four straight crowns from 2006-09 and added ones in 2014 and 2016. On the flip side, Ramapo is in the championship game for the first time as the Roadrunners are making their sixth overall appearance in the conference tournament.
The teams are meeting in the NJAC Tournament for the second time. Ramapo won the first contest with a 2-1 victory in Mahwah in 2005. The Red Hawks and Roadrunners have squared off twice in ECAC Tournament with Montclair State coming out on top in both matches by 1-0 margins, 2002 (First Round) and 2003 (Metro Championship Game).
Not only were the two squads 1-2 in the league standings, they are two best offensive teams not only in the league but in all of Division III. Montclair State leads the country in goals scored with 78 while Ramapo is 26
th at 50 goals. The Red Hawks are averaging 4.11 goals per game with Ramapo at 2.63 goals per contest.
While MSU has the most explosive scoring numbers as a team, the Roadrunners have the top scoring individual in the country in junior Joseph Fala, who has a Division III-best 25 goals and is second among all NCAA players – Division I, II and III. Trevor Albrecht has 10 assists and 16 points on the year with Nick Petrozziello and Chris Nash each recording 10 points.
The Red Hawks counter that with four 20-point scorers in their lineup led by senior
RAFAEL TERCI with 29 on 10 goals and nine assists. Burnett and Huerta are at 28 apiece with identical 12-goal, four-assist totals. Junior
NIXON SOGLO has nine goals and three assists for 21 points.
And if you think the teams are just about offense, think again. Ramapo has allowed just 17 goals in 19 contests this season with Montclair State surrendering 18 in its 19 contests. The Red Hawks led the NJAC in shutouts with 10 this season while Ramapo has seven.
Montclair State leads the all-time series 30-13-5 and has won six of the last eight contests however the Roadrunners are 2-1 in the last three meetings.
