Box Score Montclair, NJ – Mike Caposella, Joey Tiernan and Eric Ellis each scored four goals as Stockton University shut down Montclair State after the first quarter for a 13-7 victory at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.
Justin Ruiz stopped 12 shots as the Ospreys (4-3) knocked off MSU for the first time since a 14-5 win in Galloway on March 21, 2006, a span of 19 games that included three consecutive Skyline Conference championship games. It also marked Stockton's first win at Sprague Field since March 24, 2001 (12-5).
SEAN STADTLANDER had two goals for Montclair State, which fell to 3-3 on the season.
The Red Hawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first five minutes of the contest.
MATT HAEMMERLE fed
BRADY WULSTER for the game's first goal with Stadtlander and
SKYLER FRANCISCO scored 52 seconds apart with 10 minutes to play.
But Stockton answered with five straight goals starting with Ellis' unassisted score with nine minutes left. Caposella got the next two and back-to-back goals by Tiernan gave the Ospreys a 5-3 lead with 1:49 to go. Haemmerle stopped the spurt with 31 seconds left however Caposella scored with nine ticks remaining giving the Ospreys a 6-4 lead after one quarter.
Montclair's
DAN BELLEZZA opened the second quarter with a goal 2:26 in cutting the deficit to 6-5. But that would be the last goal Stockton would allow for the next 21 minutes of the game. Ellis connected less than a minute later and his third with 4:04 to play helped Stockton to an 8-5 lead at the break.
Stadlander finally got MSU back on the scoreboard with 6:44 left in the third however the Ospreys countered with the next five goals bridging the third and fourth quarters extending their lead to 13-6. Tiernan had two in the run with Luc Swedlund registering a man-up goal and two assists.
Haemmerle finished with a goal and two assists for Montclair State, which got 10 saves from
JACK CARDEW and three from
MATTHEW MCLAREN.
The Red Hawks will look to get back on the winning track on Tuesday, April 3 as it heads to Madison, NJ to face Drew University at 7:00 pm. It will be the first meeting between the teams since 2013.
