Red Hawks Edge New York Martime for Third Straight Win

Upper Montclair, NJ - The Montclair State University men's lacrosse team continued its winning ways with a 10-9 victory over visiting New York Maritime College today at MSU's Sprague Field.

Montclair State moves to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the Knickerbocker Lacrosse Conference, while NY Maritime falls to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in league play.

Sophomore attacker Chris Meixner (Hamburg, NJ) notched four goals and two assists for the Red Hawks, setting up the game-winning score by senior midfielder Nick Bombadier (Fair Lawn, NJ) with 3:51 remaining in regulation, while junior midfielder Matt Von Klemperer (Summit, NJ) tallied two goals for Montclair in the fourth quarter.

Freshman attacker Kevin Gondres (Fair Lawn, NJ) added a goal and two assists for MSU, while junior goalkeeper Vinny DeGennaro (Fair Lawn, NJ) finished with seven saves, including five stops in the second half.

Montclair trailed, 5-3, at halftime, before outscoring the visiting Privateers by a 4-1 count in the third quarter. MSU trailed by a 6-4 count before junior midfielder Anthony Mosca scored with 11:08 left in the third stanza, and then took the lead for good on back-to-back goals by Meixner just 3:33 apart, the second score coming with just 20 seconds left in the third frame. BILL MARTINO and JOEL KNIPPEL each recorded a team-high three goals and one assist for NYM, with Knippel pulling the Privateers to within a goal with 43 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter before MSU ran out the clock.

NYM midfielder JAMIE LYMAN registered two assists, while goalkeeper BRIAN HOUST made 19 saves, including 12 stops in the first half. MSU outshot NYM, 44-21, on the afternoon and also won the groundball war, 40-32, and the face-off contest, 13-6. Montclair went 0-for-3 with the man-advantage, while NYM connected twice on four power-play opportunities.

Montclair returns to conference action on Saturday, March 23, at Richard Stockton College in Pomona, NJ.
