– The Red Hawks are back in action for the first time since last March when they host Salisbury University at the Panzer Athletic Center in the opener for both teams.

THE TEAMS:
Montclair State comes into the 2021 campaign looking to build on its success from a year ago. The Red Hawks finished 21-7 and advanced to the championship game of the NJAC Tournament after finishing second in the league (15-3) and earning the No. 2 seed. That helped MSU earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship, the Red Hawks' seventh trip to the national tournament in the last eight seasons. Salisbury posted a 12-15 mark during the 2019-20 campaign with five losses coming by seven points or less. The Sea Gulls reached the semifinals of the Capital Athletic Conference Championship Tournament beating Southern Virginia in the opening round before falling to No. 24 Christopher Newport

Monday's game is the sixth between the Sea Gulls and Red Hawks with Montclair capturing the last four, including a 68-44 triumph in the 2015 NCAA Division III Sectional Final at the Panzer Athletic Center, the second of two meetings between the schools that season. Amy Campion scored 17 points helping Salisbury take the initial meeting in December 2001, 69-52 at the PAC. It would be 11 years before the two squared off again. The Red Hawks won that meeting with a 79-53 triumph in the championship game of the Gwynedd-Mercy Tip-Off that gave MSU head coach Karin Harvey her 100th career victory. MSU made it two straight the next year winning 70-53 in the San Juan Shootout in Puerto Rico as it held Salisbury to 17 points in the second half. Janitza Aquino scored 22 points and was named MVP as the No. 7 Red Hawks took the battle of unbeaten teams, beating the Sea Gulls 76-54 in the championship game of the Sheraton Parsippany Holiday Tournament.

NEXT UP: Montclair State turns its attention to its eight-game NJAC schedule which begins on Friday, February 5 in Wayne, NJ at William Paterson. The two teams will then square off the following day at the Panzer Athletic Center in the second half of the back-to-league, home-and-home league schedule format.
