Softball: Season Preview

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State softball team kicks off their 2022 campaign with games against Gettysburg and Gwynedd Mercy Monday.

The Red Hawks will battle Gettysburg at 9:30 am and Gwynedd Mercy at 11:30 am as part of the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic in Myrtle Beach, SC.
 
SCHEDULE AT A GLANCE
Montclair State will play eight games in five days in Myrtle Beach, with their lone off day coming on Thursday. MSU will host Centenary University in their home opener on March 17 before welcoming Hunter on March 19. After hitting the road to face DeSales (March 20), the Red Hawks return to the MSU Softball Stadium for 10 straight games. They close out the homestand by opening NJAC play against Rutgers-Newark on April 2. The team visits Kean (April 5) and Ramapo (April 9) before hosting Rutgers-Camden on April 12. Two of the following three series are home, with the lone road affair against Rowan on April 16. Montclair closes out the home slate against William Paterson (April 19) and TCNJ (April 23) before ending the year with NJCU (April 26) and Stockton (April 30).
 
PRESEASON RANKING
MSU was tabbed picked fifth in the NJAC Preseason Coaches Poll. Rowan University claimed the top spot and earned six first-place votes, while The College of New Jersey was second with the final four first-place votes. Kean University and Stockton University were just ahead of Montclair State at the third and fourth spots. Ramapo College, Rutgers-Camden, William Paterson University, Rutgers-Newark, and New Jersey City University completed the poll. William Paterson was tabbed as the "Dark Horse" candidate amongst the NJAC coaches.

2021 SEASON IN REVIEW
The Red Hawks went 13-9 in an abbreviated season in 2021 and earned the No. 3 seed in the NJAC Tournament. They were outlasted by No. 6 seed Stockton in the NJAC Quarterfinals, as they fell 6-3 and 3-1. Montclair State finished the season by winning six of their final eight games, including sweeps of NJCU, Kean, and William Paterson. KAYLA GALLO was a First Team All-East Region after leading the Red Hawks with a .492 batting average and 31 hits while also hitting four home runs with 20 RBI. The senior had 11 games with multiple hits, including going 3-for-3 with a home run and two doubles against Rutgers-Camden. Against New Jersey City, she went 2-for-3 with three runs scored in addition to hitting a homer with four RBI.
 
ALL-NJAC RETURNERS
KAYLA COSENTINO was named First Team All-NJAC last spring, as ALI CAVALLARO and ALYSSA BOROZAN gained Second Team accolades. Cosentino batted .315 while collecting 17 hits, eight runs scored, and eight RBI. Cavallaro has posted an 8-4 mark in the circle for the Red Hawks, pitching to a 3.01 ERA over 72.0 innings. She has thrown eight complete games and fanned a team-high 45 hitters while appearing in 13 games with 11 starts. A two-time NJAC Rookie Pitcher of the Week last year, she struck out a career-best 12 against Rutgers-Newark in just her second appearance. Borozan was fourth on the team with a .308 batting average while collecting 20 hits, 14 RBI, and 12 runs. She threw 1 2/3 shutout innings against Rutgers-Camden in the circle to earn her first victory as a Red Hawk.

The Red Hawks continue the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic with games against Salem College at 11:30 am and Anna Maria
College at 1:30 pm.
