Preview | Women's Soccer vs. Virginia Wesleyan (NCAA First Round)

Montclair, NJ – The No. 20 Montclair State University women's soccer team heads to Virginia Beach, Va., for the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer First and Second Rounds this weekend.

The Red Hawks will face host Virginia Wesleyan at 1:30 pm on Saturday while defending National Champion Johns Hopkins University battles Penn State-Berks at 11 am. Live stats and video links are available on montclairathletics.com

Ticket Prices are $6 for Adults, $3 for Students and Seniors, and $2 for ages 3-12. Cash is preferred. 

LAST TIME OUT
The Red Hawks (13-3-2, 6-1-2 NJAC) fell 3-2 to second-seeded TCNJ in the NJAC Semifinals on October 31. The Lions led 2-0 at the break before KYLIE PRENDERGAST's individual effort for a goal made it 2-1. TCNJ added a third tally in the 72nd minute before AILEEN CAHILL converted a penalty kick with 3:21 remaining. The Red Hawks could not find the equalizing tally and fell 3-2.

MONTCLAIR STATE NCAA HISTORY
Montclair State is making its ninth appearance in the NCAA Tournament, the second since 2016. They are 10-7-1 and have advanced to the Second Round in their eight previous tournament appearances.

ALL-NJAC
AILEEN CAHILL was tabbed as the NJAC Offensive Player of the Year as SHANNON MULLINS collected NJAC Rookie of the Year honors. MEAGAN O'CALLAHAN, KYLIE PRENDERGAST, and EMMI DENOVELLIS joined Cahill on the First Team, as KERRI DRISCOLL was named Second Team and HALEY MARTIN Honorable Mention.

SCOUTING VIRGINIA WESLEYAN
The Marlins, who won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, enter the game with a 16-3-1 record. They went 9-0-1 in the conference and outscored their three opponents 5-0 in the ODAC Tournament. Seven student-athletes were named All-ODAC, with Sam Crawford earning Player of the Year honors and Rachel Quigley gaining Defensive Player of the Year laurels. The Marlins have surrendered eight goals all season and have given up one since September 24.

SCOUTING JOHNS HOPKINS
Johns Hopkins, the defending NCAA Division III National Champions, posted a 15-2-2 record and won the Centennial Conference with a late-minute goal from Megha Salvi in a 2-1 win over Franklin & Marshall. The Blue Jays, who went 8-1-1 in the Centennial, have had both losses by 1-0 scorelines. Six Blue Jays were named All-Centennial Conference and were paced by the Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Year, Katie Sullivan.

SCOUTING PENN STATE-BERKS
The Nittany Lions claimed the United East Championship after blanking Bryn Athyn 3-0 in the Championship. Berks went 10-8-2 on the season while posting a 4-1-1 conference record. Diana Pon won United East Player of the Year, making the 10th straight year a Nittany Lions claimed the honor. Sophia Gonzalez gained Defensive Player of the Year laurels as PSU placed six on the All-United East Team.

SERIES HISTORY
Montclair is 0-0-1 against Virginia Wesleyan, with the two sides meeting in 2010. Looking ahead, the Red Hawks and Johns Hopkins have met once prior, with the Blue Jays taking a 2-1 victory in 2014. Montclair and Penn State-Berks have not played each other.

LAST MEETING
Montclair and VWU battled to a 1-1 draw on September 3, 2010. Despite getting outshot 22-4, the Red Hawks drew first blood at Rachel Senyszyn, who scored an unassisted marker in the 14th minute. The score remained that way until the 84th minute, when the Marlins equalized. Marisa Zayac made 12 saves for Montclair in the tie.

The two advancing teams will meet Sunday at 1 pm with a trip to the Sectional Tournament on the line.
