Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State University men's lacrosse team travels to face Widener University on Wednesday night.

LAST TIME OUT
The Red Hawks surged past Southwestern (TX) 20-5 on Sunday, March 24 at Sprague Field. Montclair raced out to an 8-0 advantage after the first quarter, as RYAN VIERBUCHEN netted the first two markers before JACK CLEARY assisted on three straight goals. LOUIS AZARA capped off the first frame with a tally, with JOHN CRANK and CODY COOPER netting one each to start the second. The Pirates found the back of the net twice to go into the break down eight, but Montclair outscored the visitors 10-3 in the second half to earn the victory. Cleary tied the school record with 10 assists equaling Kevin Oxley's mark set on April 15, 1982. Eight different Red Hawks tallied multi-point outings, and all three goalies saw action and recorded saves.

SCOUTING WIDENER
The Pride enter Wednesday night's contest with a 1-7 mark and will look to snap a three-game losing streak. Widener opened their season with a defeat at #17 Swarthmore, and dropped their next three against Shenandoah, Haverford, and Cabrini. They picked up their first win of the campaign on March 6, taking down Gwynedd Mercy 18-9. The Pride have lost their last three since, including a 11-8 setback in their most recent game on Saturday, March 23. Widener went 9-9 during the 2023 season, falling in the MAC Commonwealth Semifinals to #10 York. They were tabbed fourth in their conference preseason coaches poll heading into the 2024 season. 

SERIES HISTORY
Montclair and Widener have met just twice in their history, with each side picking up a victory on their home field. The Red Hawks cruised past the Pride 13-1 on April 1, 1989, with Widener claiming the only other meeting on March 29, 2008, 10-6.

LAST MEETING
The Red Hawks fell to Widener 10-6 on March 29, 2008. The Pride scored the first two markers of the contest while holding Montclair scoreless through the opening 15 minutes of the contest. Montclair rattled off four straight goals during the second stanza, including three from A.J. Bachman, to take their first lead of the game with 5:46 remaining in the first half. Widener closed the frame with the last two markers, and after Montclair opened the third with a marker from John Schiavone, the Pride outscored the Red Hawks 5-1 the rest of the way to seal the victory.

UP NEXT
The Red Hawks will return home to open Coastal Lacrosse Conference play on Saturday, March 30, against Christopher Newport University. Opening faceoff from Sprague Field is slated for 12:00 PM.
