Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State University men's lacrosse team opens Coastal Lacrosse Conference play against #6 Christopher Newport University on Saturday afternoon.

LAST TIME OUT
The Red Hawks (4-4) scored on their first possession of the night on a goal from RYAN VIERBUCHEN, and later doubled their lead on a marker from BRANDON LEWANDOWSKI. Widener leveled the contest on back-to-back possessions following a timeout with 4:28 in the first and took their first lead halfway through the second stanza. CODY COOPER scored 39 seconds later after the Red Hawks won the faceoff to tie the game again. The Pride built a multi-goal lead, but Vierbuchen scored right before the half to cut the deficit in half. With the score still even late in the third, JOHN CRANK struck to give Montclair a 7-6 edge going into the final frame. After the Red Hawks took a multi-goal lead in the fourth, Widener scored three-straight markers to take the lead with seven minutes left. Montclair scored the last two goals of the game to close out the road victory.

SCOUTING CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT
The Captains enter conference play ranked sixth in the nation and a 7-3 mark on the 2024 campaign. They opened their run with five-straight victories, outscoring opponents by 40 goals. Their last five contests have all been against ranked opponents, including two residing in the top five. The Pirates defeated #4 Dickinson and #13 Lynchburg during that stretch, but fell 18-12 to #20 Williams in their most recent game on Wednesday, March 27. Christopher Newport has reached the NCAA Final Four in two of their last three seasons, winning 57 contests since the start of the 2021 campaign. They were tabbed second in the CLC Preseason Coaches Poll and returned 10 All-Conference honorees from 2023.

SERIES HISTORY
Montclair and Christopher Newport have only met one prior time in their history, with the Captains coming out victorious last season in the first year of the CLC.

LAST MEETING
The Red Hawks fell 20-5 to #2 Christopher Newport on March 11, 2023. The Captains opened with the game's first nine tallies and took 31 shots in the first half. MATTHEW HOLLAND got the Red Hawks on the board 21 seconds into the third quarter, but the Captains responded with the following three markers. ANDREA FIORENZA scored seven seconds after a CNU goal, with JOE COVINO and MIKE MCCREERY adding goals in the final minute to establish the final margin.
