Box Score Mansfield, CT – Eastern Connecticut pitchers Ty Bongiovanni and Brian Gouin combined on a six-hit shutout as Eastern Connecticut blanked Montclair State, 5-0 on Tuesday afternoon at the ECSU Baseball Stadium.
First baseman John Kubachka belted a pair of home runs and finished with three RBI as the Warriors (17-7) handed the Red Hawks (13-7) its first shutout loss since an 8-0 setback to Pomona-Pitzer last March, a span of 64 games. The loss also snapped Montclair's winning streak at seven games.
Bongiovanni improved to 3-2 on the year as he struck out 10 and walked two through the first 7 1/3 innings. Gouin finished up with 1 2/3 scoreless to earn his fourth save of the year. Junior left-hander
COREY HAMMAN took the loss as he fell to 4-4.
The game was scoreless through the first 5 ½ innings until the Warriors scored twice thanks to Kubachka, whose blast to left-center also scored Nick Tempesta for the two-run lead. Eastern added a run in the seventh as a two-out error left the door open. Dwight Wildman reached and stole second. Hamman struck out Jared Holowaty but the ball was in the dirt and the throw down to first base got away allowing Wildman to score for a 3-0 advantage.
The Warriors tacked on two runs in the eighth, the first on Kubachka's second home of the game. Joey Serfass lofted a sacrifice fly that scored John Hedde, who followed the home run with a double to right center.
CRAIG CONWAY had two hits for Montclair State.
The Red Hawks will look to bounce back on Friday, April 13 when it returns to NJAC play with a road contest at Rutgers-Camden beginning at 3:30 p.m.
