Boyertown, PA – Senior second baseman
DAVE WURST homered for the second straight day as Montclair State eliminated DeSales University Friday, 9-5, in Game 5 of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Baseball Tournament. But the win came at an expensive price.
While leading off second base in the fifth inning Red Hawks' shortstop
BRIAN ELLERSON, who has been playing with torn cartilage in his right knee, had that same knee give out. He lay on the ground for several minutes before being helped off the field by teammates.
"It just gave way and I heard it pop," said Ellerson. "It's disappointing because I was just getting back into the swing of things."
"It took a lot out of me," said Wurst of Ellerson's injury. "He's one of those guys who will do anything to help ou win and it's going to be tough to replace him. But we can't dwell on it and we know we have to step up."
DeSales managed to close to within 6-5 in the seventh on a Brett Vargo homer off Red Hawks starter
RYAN COSTELLO.
SCOTT ALLAN replaced Costello with one out and walked the first batter he faced to put runners on first and second. Allan fell behind Tony D'Amico 3-1 before battling back for the strikeout. He then got Cory Schneck to ground out to end the inning.
"I felt great," said Allan, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI double. "The first two guys were able to get to me, but I settled down after that I was fine."
Junior
CHRIS BARAN drove in three runs for the Red Hawks (33-9), who will face Johns Hopkins in Game 7 today.
