New Haven, CT (1/11/03) - Senior TIERRA HICKS (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) and junior ALEX TORRES (Irvington, NJ/Roselle Catholic) each took home honors in the 400 meters as the Montclair State men's and women's indoor track and field teams resumes their 2002-03 season at the Yale Classic on Saturday afternoon.
Hicks, who has already qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships in March, easily won the women's 400 meters as she bested the field by more than two seconds with a 58.37. She also placed fifth in the 55 hurdles (9.11). Freshman HASHAN JOHNSON (Bridgeton, NJ/Bridgeton), who is also headed to the NCAA Division III Championships, was third in the long jump as she leaped 5.28 meters (17' 4").
On the men's side, Torres led a 1-2 Red Hawk finish in the 400 meters as he edged out teammate DARRYL LOUIS (Trenton, NJ/Trenton) by 16/100ths of a second. Torres crossed the line in a time of 49.90 with Louis coming in at 50.16. Sophomore ED HAMILTON (Trenton, NJ/Ewing) was sixth in the event with a time of 51.34. Also for the men's team OSEI BONSU (Parlin, NJ/Old Bridge) placed third in the 55 meter hurdles (7.84), while the 4x400 meter relay team placed second with a time of 3:23.83.
Montclair State will return to action on Sunday, January 19th as they compete at the Robert Morris University Invitational in Moon Township, PA.
