Track Notches Top-Five Finish at NJAC Championships

New York, NY (2/23/03) - The Montclair State University indoor track and field teams both finished among the top five in their respective divisions today at the 2003 New Jersey Athletic Conference Championships held at the 168th Street Armory. Montclair State placed third in the men's division, and finished fourth in the women's bracket.

Red Hawk senior TIERRA HICKS (Hillsborough, NJ) finished fourth overall in the Women's 200 Meter Dash, in a time of 26.81 seconds. She then won Women's 400 Meter Dash in 57.02 seconds. CINDY HANDLE tied for second in the Women's High Jump with a height of 1.52 meters, while freshman HASHAN JOHNSON (Bridgeton, NJ) took the Women's Long Jump with a distance of 5.49 meters. CHERYL SIMMIONS was second in the Women's Long Jump (4.36 meters), and fourth in the Women's Triple Jump (10.03 meters).

Junior DARRYL LOUIS (Trenton, NJ) won the Men's 200 Meter Dash in a time of 22.29 seconds, and then claimed the Men's 400 Meter Dash in 49.24 seconds. Junior ALEX TORRES (Irvington, NJ) placed second in the Men's 400 (49.54), while sophomore ED HAMILTON (Trenton, NJ) was third (49.92). Sophomore OSEI BONSU (Parlin, NJ) took the Men's 55 Meter Hurdles (7.83) to complete the day.

Setting NJAC meet records today were Hicks (400 Meters) and Johnson (Long Jump), who were both named to the 2002-03 NJAC Women's All-Conference First Team, while Handle earned Honorable Mention (High Jump). Louis was named the Co-Outstanding Male Track Athlete, as well as Men's First Team All-Conference (200 Meters, 400 Meters) along with the MSU 4x400 Relay team. Torres was Second Team in the 400 Meters, while ED HAMILTON made Honorable Mention, as did the MSU 4x800 Relay team.

MSU's next competition comes at the ECAC Championships in Boston on March 8-9.
