Men's Indoor Captures Second CTC Championship; Women Place Eighth

New York, NY (2/08/03) - The Montclair State University men's indoor track and field team successfully defended their CTC Championship on Saturday as the Red Hawks posted a first-place finish in the meet held 168th Street Armory in the Bronx, NY. Montclair finished with 88 points, 10 points ahead of runner-up and NJAC rival Rowan University. The MSU women's team placed eighth among 22 teams, finishing with a total of 29 points.

Junior sprinter DARRYL LOUIS (Trenton, NJ) was a double-winner in the meet as he won both the 200 and 400 meters. Louis won the 400 for the second straight year as he edged out Michael Brown of York College with a time of 49.26. Junior ALEX TORRES (Irvington, NJ/Roselle Catholic) placed third with a time of 49.71. MSU had four of the Top 10 finishes in the event as ED HAMILTON (Trenton, NJ/Ewing) and ROB MARTINEZ (Paterson, NJ/Don Bosco Prep) were seventh and 10th, respectively.

Louis then narrowly beat Oliver St. Aud of Lehman College to win the 200 in a time of 22.56. Sophomore JEROME MORGAN (Newark, NJ/West Potomac (VA)) placed fifth (23.36). Freshman PAUL NOEL (East Orange, NJ/Biship Francis) led a 1-2 finish in the 500 Meters as he won the race with a time of 1:05.54. CHRIS MONACO (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) was second (1:06.75). Sophomore OSEI BONSU (Parlin, NJ/Old Bridge, NJ) won the 55 Meter High Hirdles as he recorded a winning time of 7.96. Bonsu had recorded the fastest time in the preliminaries (8.01). Freshman CURTIS SYLVESTER (Jersey City, NJ/Dominican Republic) won the triple jump with a leap of 13.61 meters (44-feet, 8-inches).

The 1,600 meter relay team continued their impressive season as the quartet of Louis, Torres, Hamilton and Monaco posted a time of 3:20.62.

On the women's side senior TIERRA HICKS (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) won both the 200 and 400 meters in times of 25.63 and 56.74, respectively. Freshman HASHAN JOHNSON (Bridgeton, NJ/Bridgeton) was third in the long jump with a leap of 5.29 meters (17-feet, 4 1/4 inches).
