Box Score Montclair, NJ - Senior first baseman RYAN THIEME was 3-4 with a two-run home run in Montclair State's decisive 13-2 victory over 11th-ranked Alvernia University on Monday afternoon.
Thieme's homer was one of 15 MSU hits in the contest to back the first career start of freshman righthander TYLER HIGGINS.
The Red Hawks struck quickly in the first inning with a JOE NORTON RBI single that scored leadoff man CONNOR KELLY. Thieme immediately followed with his home run, a line shot to right field that landed on the grassy hill at Yogi Berra Stadium.
Montclair added four in the third, one in the fourth, and five in the fifth for its 13 runs. Thieme, BRODY LABBE, and CHRIS WINTERS all had multiple RBIs, while Norton scored four runs. Kelly and Labbe scored twice.
Higgins went four innings in his first start and allowed just one run on five hits and a walk while striking out five. He was relieved by MAX MAARLEVELD (1-1), who threw three scoreless innings and struck out five for his first win of the season. MARK LEYBLE and TAYLOR PARSONS pitched the eighth and ninth innings, respectively. Alvernia starter Jarrad Graver fell to 2-1 with the loss.
MSU is now 10-17 with the win. Their next game at Yogi Berra Stadium will be on Wednesday at 3:30 against Neumann University.
