Montclair Swept by Rutgers-Newark, Misses Out on NJAC Tournament

Scarlet Raiders Topple Red Hawks 7-4 & 8-2

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State baseball team saw its season come to an end as the Red Hawks dropped a doubleheader with Rutgers-Newark at Yogi Berra Stadium on Saturday.  

The Scarlet Raiders (12-23, 4-13 NJAC) used two late inning pushes sweeping the doubleheader by scores of 8-4 and 7-2.

MSU closed out the year with five straight losses and finished the year 19-19 overall, 7-11 in NJAC play. The Red Hawks entered the day still in contention for a spot in the conference tournament however the two losses dashed those hopes away
In the opener, Adam Tricarico gave Rutgers-Newark a 3-0 lead in the top of the first with a three-run homer. Montclair answered with two in the bottom of the inning. JOE NORTON scored on a throwing error and IAN LYNCH singled through the left side scoring ANTHONY GUARINO making the score 3-2.

NICK MARTINEZ tied the game in the bottom of the second with an RBI single however Tricarico, who had seven RBI in the game, collected and RBI single putting the Raiders back in front 4-3. Tricarico, 4-for-5 in the game, delivered the big blow in the seventh with bases-clearing double for a 7-3 advantage. Anthony Perconte doubled in Tricarico for the final run.

Montclair got one back in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by ANDREW OLLWERTHER.

Righthander Luis Rojas (2-4) got the victory as he pitched the first six innings allowing four runs (two earned) and six hits. He struck out six and walked five. Michael Katims pitched three scoreless inning to close out the game for his first save of the season. Senior righthander ANTHONY DEBLASIO (2-1) took the loss for MSU.

Lynch finished 2-for-4 for Montclair State.

The second game was a scoreless duel between the Raiders' Mike Zibrin and the Red Hawks' Michael Mafra until the sixth when Dominic Magliaro lofted a sac fly scoring Perconte with the game's first run. MSU took advantage of an error for two runs in the bottom of the inning forging a 2-2 tie.

Rutgers-Newark broke the game open in the ninth with five runs. John Klimowich brought home the go-ahead run with a sac fly and Brian Boulineau was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force home another run. Tricarico delivered another big hit with a two-run single for a 6-2 advantage. Boulineau scampered home on a passed ball for the final run.

Zibrin (2-6) went the distance allowing eight hits and two unearned runs. He struck out five and walked two. Manfra (4-5) suffered the loss in his final appearance for MSU.

Martinez, Lynch and Guarino had two hits apiece for the Red Hawks.
