Preview | Baseball vs Swarthmore

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State University baseball team opens its 2024 season against Swarthmore College on Friday afternoon.

First pitch at Ripken Experience in Aberdeen, MD is scheduled for 2:00 PM.

LAST TIME OUT
The Red Hawks fell to Kean 11-8 in the NJAC Tournament on May 7, 2023. Montclair opened a 2-0 lead in the first inning with MATTEO PASCULLI and JASON MOORE driving in runs. Kean would later take a 5-4 advantage after three innings, and after the Red Hawks briefly retook the lead, the Cougars rattled off five-straight runs to go up 11-6 after eight and would hold on to advance in the competition. JOE GISONDA had a career-high five hits with two home runs and three runs scored.

2023 SEASON IN REVIEW
Montclair opened the season with wins in eight of their first nine games before MATTEO PASCULLI delivered a walk-off single against Manhattanville in late March. RYAN MCKENNA hit for the cycle against Lehman before SAM ANGELO equaled the feat against NJCU on April 14. The Red Hawks closed out the regular season with eight consecutive wins, clinching the No. 3 seed in the NJAC Tournament. Montclair topped No. 4 William Paterson in the First Round of the NJAC Tournament, winning 9-2 on the heels of three home runs.

SCOUTING SWARTHMORE
The Garnet will look to build off their 2023 season in which they won 20 games, including nine in Centennial Conference play. Swarthmore went 1-3 against NJAC opponents, taking down Ramapo 12-0 on March 24, 2023. They fell to Kean, Rutgers-Camden, and Rowan, being outscored 39-9 in those games. Swarthmore fell to Haverford College in the first round of the Centennial Conference Tournament. The Garnet have won 20 or more contests in nine of their last 13 seasons. 

SERIES HISTORY
Swarthmore leads the all-time series 2-1 against Montclair and has claimed the last two meetings, both coming during the 2022 season. The two sides met in Aberdeen, MD in February of 2022, with the Garnet taking that matchup 14-5.

LAST MEETING
Montclair fell to Swarthmore 8-7 on March 19, 2022. The Garnet jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings and later expanded the advantage to 5-1 after five frames. The Red Hawks would later tie the game in the seventh on a three-run home run from ANTHONY GUARINO. Swarthmore quickly regained the lead with two runs of their own and did not relinquish the advantage the rest of the way. MICHAEL MURPHY had three hits and three RBI in the contest.
