Baseball Edged by Virginia Wesleyan, 7-6

Box Score Virginia Beach, VA The Montclair State University baseball team was edged by Virginia Wesleyan 7-6 on a walk-off single Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (4-1) received a strong first inning from JACK HAVESON, who punched out three of the four batters he faced in the frame. The Marlins took an early lead in the second, however, as they placed two runners in scoring position with one out on a passed ball. Two batters later, a single up the middle plated both runners to give the home side the advantage.
  • Montclair answered immediately in the third with their first tally of the afternoon, as LUKAS EGENHAUSER singled up the middle and took second during the next at-bat on a passed ball. MICHAEL MURPHY later drove him home on a single to cut the deficit in half.
  • Haveson retired the side 1-2-3 in the fourth, leading the way for the Red Hawks to take the lead in the fifth. Back-to-back doubles from ZACH STEARNS and Egenhauser leveled the contest, and JARED LEVIS reached safely on a bunt to put runners on the corners with no outs. Murphy drove in a run on a single to right center, and a passed ball brought home Levis two batters later. BRODY DIERS tallied the final marker of the frame on a single to left field to make the score 5-2 at the halfway point.
  • After another 1-2-3 inning from Haveson, Montclair tacked on their sixth run of the day in the ensuing frame. With CHRIS GONZALO on second and two outs, Levis delivered a key swing and singled through the right side to bring home the runner. In the bottom of the sixth, with runners on first and second and two outs, NICK DESIDERIO entered the game in relief and recorded a crucial strikeout to end the rally for the home side.
  • Virginia Wesleyan cut into the deficit in the seventh, as a double through the left side brought in a run to make the score 6-3 with one out. With runners on the corners and two away, another double from the Marlins drove in the fourth and fifth runs of the day to make it a one-run contest going into the final two frames. In the bottom of the eighth, the Marlins used a leadoff double and sacrifice bunt to move a runner to third that they later scored on a sacrifice fly to left field to tie the game.
  • The Marlins walked it off in the ninth, as a hit batter and two errors put runners on first and third with no outs. A single to left field during the next at-bat clinched the game for the home side.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • Levis led the way for the Red Hawks with a game-high three hits, marking his fourth multi-hit contest of the campaign. Murphy added a pair of hits and two runs batted in, with Egenhauser adding two hits to extend his season-opening hitting streak to five games.
  • Haveson finished the day with five and two thirds innings pitched, striking out eight batters.
