Baseball Clipped by Rutgers-Camden, 8-3

Box Score Camden, NJ The Montclair State University baseball team was clipped by Rutgers-Camden 8-3 on Thursday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (23-13, 9-6 NJAC) jumped out to an early lead in the top of the second. CHASE FISCHER and MICHAEL MURPHY were both hit by pitches to put two runners on with one out for LUKAS EGENHAUSER, who singled to right field to plate Fischer. After MATT SHUHET walked to load the bases, CHRIS GONZALO utilized a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Murphy and double the advantage.
  • Rutgers-Camden cut the margin in half in the third, placing the leadoff man on with a single and advancing him to second on a passed ball. A walk and fly out put runners on the corners, and the Scarlet Raptors successfully converted a safety squeeze bunt to plate the runner from third. They claimed the lead in the following frame on a single to center field that brought in two runs.
  • Montclair attempted to level the contest in the fifth, as Gonzalo led off the stanza with a double to left center, and JARED LEVIS reached safely on a bunt attempt to move Gonzalo to third. The Scarlet Raptors prevented Gonzalo from taking home as Levis advanced to second to keep the game at 3-2. Rutgers-Camden used a solo home run in the fifth to double their lead.
  • Fischer provided an immediate answer as he homered to right field to lead off the sixth and bring Montclair within one run again. Rutgers-Camden surged offensively over the next two innings, as they plated three runs in the seventh on four hits, and added another in the eighth to take a five-run lead into the final frame.
