LAST TIME OUT
Montclair earned its fourth mercy rule win in a row, downing New Paltz 16-5 in seven innings on Tuesday. The Red Hawks (12-3) fell behind in the first as New Paltz stole home on an attempt from Montclair to back-pick a runner at first base. A single and a walk loaded the bases for the visitors, leading to a sacrifice fly to double the advantage. Montclair provided an immediate response in the home half of the opener, as
ZACH STEARNS blasted a two-run home run over the left field fence to equalize two batters in.
BILLY TIGAR tripled to center field right after, and following a hit batter,
DANNY O'BRIEN singled through the left side to push the Red Hawks in front. Wansaw notched the second triple of the inning for Montclair to clear the bases, and
JAXON GRANT drove him in from third to make the score 6-2. A sacrifice bunt moved Grant to second, and a walk and a hit batter loaded the bases for Tigar. Following a pitching change, a balk brought in another tally, and following a walk to reload the bases, a wild pitch increased the difference to six. New Paltz trimmed the deficit at the top of the second on a double and triple to get their third marker of the day. A groundout during the ensuing at-bat brought them within four, but a throwdown to second from Grant later in the frame halted the rally. Montclair added to their lead in their half of the third, as
JARED LEVIS led off the stanza with a single up the middle. Stearns was hit by a pitch, and with
CHASE FISCHER getting hit by one later in the inning, the bases were loaded for an O'Brien sacrifice fly. Fischer took second during the next at-bat, with Stearns coming in to score on a wild pitch to push Montclair into double-digits at 10-4. The home side tacked on another in the fourth, as Wansaw led it off with his second triple of the day to put a runner in scoring position for
LUKAS EGENHAUSER, who singled on a bunt attempt and advanced to second on a throwing error by the pitcher, allowing Wansaw to come in and score.
LOGAN SHUMARD entered the game and retired the side in order, leading to another innings in which the Red Hawks generated runs at the plate. With two outs, back-to-back walks and a wild pitch placed two runners in scoring position. After Wansaw walked to load the bases,
JOEY NOLAN drew a walk after a nine-pitch at-bat to push the score to 12-4. Tigar notched an RBI single in the sixth to increase the lead to nine, and with two more runners in scoring position, O'Brien recorded another sacrifice fly to make the margin double-digits.
JOHN TOMSHO ripped a single through the left side to notch a run batted in, as Wansaw hit his final triple of the day to plate the final tally of the day for the Red Hawks, who sealed the game in seven innings.
