He is perhaps the finest all-around athlete Montclair State has ever produced. An outstanding football player and track competitor, Amod Field was such a talented athlete that he played a year of basketball “just to keep in shape.” All his did that season was lead the team in scoring at 15.4 points per games and grabbed nearly five rebounds per contest. That along will tell you how good and athlete he was. But it was his prowess on the track and the gridiron that Field made his name. On the track he was an eight-time NCAA Division III Track and Field All-American, winning the outdoor NCAA title in the 400 meter hurdles on two occasions. He was an All-NJAC member in five different events, including the 110 and 400 hurdles, long jump, triple jump and high jump. In addition to his NJAC accomplishments, Field captured the 500 meters at the Olympic Invitation Track Meet at the Meadowlands Arena. In football, perhaps no wide receiver in Montclair history struck more fear into the hearts of defensive units as his incredible speed and great hands allowed him to catch 108 passes for 1,941 yards and 24 touchdowns. His catches ranked him third on the Montclair State career list while his yardage and TD receptions were second. A player with the flair for the dramatic, Field helped Montclair State to the NJAC championship and berth in the NCAA Division III Playoffs in 1989 as he caught 44 passes for 769 yards and 11 touchdowns. He was also his best in big games, such as his 10-catch performance against East Stroudsburg in a 20-19 victory. He caught two touchdown passes that day, the second a one-handed catch along the backline of the end zone with 38 seconds to play. Later that season against Trenton State, Field had five catches, all of them acrobatic, for 191 yards and two touchdown as Montclair tied Trenton State, 31-31.
