De Vita starred in both football and baseball for three seasons each and also earned on varsity letter in basketball. He made his greatest claim to fame on the gridiron as a powerful running back. He scored 70 points in three varsity seasons, including 33 as a senior and was responsible for MSC's point-after-touchdowns. In his three varsity seasons, the Indians posted records of 5-4, 6-3 and 5-2. De Vita had the honor of participating in New Jersey's first intercollegiate night game, October 3, 1941, with the Indians defeating Hofstra, 13-6 at Sprague Field. On the baseball diamond, De Vita helped the squad gain records of 5-8, 9-5 and 5-5 for coach Chester Pittser. The Indians were 15-5 on the basketball court in 1938-39, the only season he competed. He was also a member of the The Tribe for three years, president of the organization for two of those years. He was also a member of Agora for three years. De Vita passed up an offer to playe for the Detroit Lions, instead joining the Army Air Corps and gaining the rank of 1st Lieutenant.
