Scoras was a four-year baseball star earning Division III First-Team All-America honors his senior year, batting .348 with 10 home runs and 40 runs batted in. He was also named to the Division III World Series Team, All-District Team and First-Team All-Stat and All-Conference. In his junior year, he batted .349 and made the All-Northeast Tournament Team. Scoras was named the Outstanding Senior Athlete in 1976. Scoras was drafted in the seventh round as a catcher by the Montreal Expos in 1976. He played rookie ball for Lethbridge in the Pioneer League and was on the triple crown. He was also chose the League MVP with 13 home runs, 64 RBI and a batting average of .373. In 1977 he played for West Palm in the Florida State League and was again the league's Most Valuable Player. He led the league with 19 homers, 86 RBI, 26 doubles, 240 bases and a batting average of .289. In 1978 and 1979, Scoras switched to first base and played for Memphis in Double-A.
