From 1981-1985, Mark Griffin made a name for himself at Montclair State as not just a one or two sport athlete, but an outstanding athlete in three sports, a rarity in college athletics. Griffin not only participated in three sports, he earned varsity letters in each of the three sports for all of his years at Montclair State. The track and field team captain in 1983 and 1984, Griffin was also named team captain for the water polo team in 1984 and the swimming team during that same year. In 1982, Griffin, in just his sophomore year, rose to the top of his chosen event, the javelin, and attained All-American status. He repeated the feat for the next two years and then went on to cap his wonderful athletic career by being named to the 1985 All-American team for water polo. Some other personal highlights for Griffin came when he placed first in the 1984 javelin at the NJAC Championship meet and went on to finish in fifth place at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
