Following her star-studded Montclair State track and field career, Fitzgerald twice dashed down the glory road to the Olympics. She competed at the 1972 Games in Munich and was honored to serve as the United States’ track team captain in Montreal in 1976. At Montclair she quickly shattered school marks for the 220, 400, long jump and high jump. She vaulted into state and national prominence by holding the record in each event for four seasons. In 1972 she was honored as New Jersey’s Outstanding Female Athlete. Fitzgerald, who garnered six MSC Varsity Awards, played field hockey as a freshmand and sophomore and was a member of the tennis team from 1970-1972.
